HOW I HEAL MY DRY WINTER HAIR

I know in California (especially San Francisco) it doesn’t get as snowy and cold as other areas of the country but I definitely can feel a difference in my hair when the weather changes.  For 2018 I’ve been trying to streamline my winter hair care routine and get back to the basics.  I’m always doing something with it–curling it, waving it, pulling it tight back into a ponytail–so giving my winter hair some love is high on my priorities for this season and the whole year!

How to Help your Dry Winter Hair

My biggest hair vices? I color it and use heat to curl and wave it.  My colorist Stacy Caitlin Hair is incredible with color and creates the prettiest shades of blonde in my naturally brunette hair.   The process is very gentle on my hair to lift the color, but I’m in need of extra moisture and care between my salon appointments.  As part of my between salon appointments and winter cold care, I’ve been focusing on bringing moisture back in so that my winter hair maintains its shine and softness.

Any given weekend, you can bet a trip to Costco is on my list–ha! It’s my favorite place to stock up on things (Lola’s favorite grain-free dog food, paper towels–you know those glamorous items!) and I recently discovered they carry the big liter size Nexxus shampoo and conditioner sets!  I’ve had Nexxus in my shower rotation for a couple years now (from this Thanksgiving boho-glam hair tutorial  and this summer picnic outfit and hairstyle) and was excited to pick up the new Nexxus Therappe Shampoo and Humectress Conditioner bundle pack.  I particularly love keeping liter size bottles in the shower for the pumps so I can speed through my shower routine.

And speaking of shower routine, I’ve noticed that using the Nexxus Therappe Shampoo and Humectress Conditioner that I’ve been overall using less product and therefore saving more money.  Typically with shampoo I’m filling up my entire palm of my hand with shampoo to get enough cleansing power to wash out oil buildup, dry shampoo and other product.  But I’ve noticed with Nexxus’ great lather I’m using about two pumps and getting my hair super clean and hydrated.

I’ve also changed up how I’m washing my winter hair to focus on cleaning at the roots and hydrating at the ends–instead of all over everything.  I feel like it has been gentler on my hair and less wasteful with product.  I’ll take my two pumps of Nexxus shampoo and focus it on my scalp rather than on my hair (trying my best to give you guys a visual here–haha).  I’ll run my fingers through my hair against my scalp and focus on creating lather at the scalp.  For me thats where I notice oil build up (benefit of oily skin…less winkles!) and there my dry shampoo build up is, and focus on getting that area clean and lathered.  Previously I would ball up all of my hair on top of my head into a big lathered mess–definitely a lot more work to brush out later.  Once I feel like my scalp has been thoroughly cleaned, I’ll rinse out the shampoo and let the lather run down the length of my hair giving it a gentle cleanse as it goes.

For conditioner, I’ll take the same two pumps of Nexxus and work it into my hair from my ears down.  I keep a hair clip in the shower and will tie my hair up and let the conditioner steam into my hair for a good five minutes or so while washing my face, etc.  When it’s time to rinse it out, I let the water do the work and feel my hair transform into cashmere.  I am completely serious when I say I’ve never felt a shampoo and conditioner combo make my hair feel so good in the shower.  So glad I found the liter sizes!

For today’s style, I washed my hair the night before with Nexxus and let it air dry.  This morning I took my curling rod and added a few curls throughout and noticed my ends feeling much more moisturized and sleek than usual.  Now I can make my hair look as good as Stacy does between salon appointments!
