When asked what women’s number one beauty product is, the answer I hear most is, hands, down mascara! For being such an amazing staple in women’s makeup bags around the world, I’m rounding up some of my tips for easy mascara application to get the best results.
COAT YOUR LASHES FROM MANY DIRECTIONS
I’m a big fan of false lashes for my blog photos or special occasions because they make your eyes pop so well, but it’s important to fully coat your lashes with mascara to get the most pumped-up volume possible—whether you’re wearing falsies or just mascara. Coat your lashes in long stokes to the left, right, up, and down, and then repeat to get the darkest coverage and also comb out any clumps in the process. FYI–I’m wearing falsies here for an extra dramatic look!
CLEAN OFF THE WAND TO AVOID MISTAKES
I’ve definitely had many instances where I’ve been 99% done with my makeup and then an accidental mascara wand stroke left me with a black mark on my face—to my major frustration! To avoid this, I will wipe the mascara wand clean from the handle to the bristles and then at the very tip to avoid a buildup of danger-zone mascara. I have found that the wand on the COVERGIRL Plumpify Mascara is thicker than usual, so this messy mascara problem is obsolete—so amazing! Not to mention, the formula plumps lashes (especially bottom lashes!) for a thick, fringy look. This mascara is my current favorite go-to mascara for a glammed-up look!
APPLY A SECOND COAT QUICKLY
I’ve found that if I wait too long in between coats of mascara, my dry lashes start to clump on the wet mascara. Once you’ve finished the second eye, start on your second coat and continue applying until you’ve reached your desired volume.
MAKE FUNNY FACES
There is a reason we naturally make silly faces when applying mascara (I’m generally a kissy face or open mouth kind of girl), because it pulls our skin taut to avoid getting stray mascara on our skin for a smoother application. Don’t fight the faces—do what you gotta do to get an even application. Work those funny faces, girl!

Love this post! I have a friend who has the hardest time putting on mascara, which is totally weird to me. But I have to say cleaning the wand from time to time really helps avoid clumps and apply seamlessly. – katy
