We’ve all been there. You’ve out with your girlfriends celebrating your new promotion, friend’s birthday, girl’s night out, bachelorette–even a night of insomnia or the baby kept you up all night. And you wake up and well….your 2nd day hair looks like it needs a whole lot of love to come back to life. I limit my hair washing to help extend the life of my color (Stacy Caitlin does my color and I’m in LOVE!)
I had a rough night yesterday when my poor pup Lola got a foxtail in her ear and we spent the night at the emergency vet–poor girl. So after a late night at the vet and no sleep worrying about my little pup, my hair was not looking good for the next day.
If you’re like me and want to protect your color and extend your blowout or style an extra day, I’m sharing my tips to refresh your hair after a rough night.
BRUSH IT OUT
First things first, brush out the tangles and knots. I swear I must toss and turn on my pillow because my hair can tangle really easily. I’ve heard of people sleeping in a braid to keep their hair intact but I personally can’t fall asleep if I have a big braid under my head. Start at the ends and work your way up to the roots until everything is detangled. At this point my roots are typically looking pretty oily and my ends are looking VERY dry. Hang in there…trust the process!
LOAD UP THE DRY SHAMPOO
Dry shampoo is my #1 best friend for bringing my hairstyle back to life. As a brunette (at least at my roots 😝) it’s challenging to find a dry shampoo that doesn’t leave my hair looking dull / grey from white powder, and I’ve noticed that the “no residue” ones don’t really do much for my oil. I’ve been experimenting with the HASK collection and have found two dry shampoos that are super easy to rub out the white residue, remove my oil, and smell amazing! HASK products are actually the hair products that are used on movie and TV sets which I didn’t know until recently, so it’s cool to feel like you’re behind the scenes and on set in a green room getting ready yourself! The movie biz is absolutely fascinating to me, ha!
I’m using a mix of the HASK Coconut Dry Shampoo and Chia Seed Dry Shampoo on my roots. The coconut one has an incredible scent to it (hello summer hair!) and chia seed really seems to give my roots an extra boost–exactly what when removing my oil slick.
Spray directly on roots in sections, give it a few minutes to sink in and absorb the oil. After a few minutes, work it into the hair by shaking your fingers through your hair and giving it a good fluff!
HYDRATE THE ENDS
Now that the oily roots have been taken care of, I need to hydrate my ends. I have a very blunt haircut so I feel like my ends can tend to look a bit…crispier…than they really are, so a lux hair oil helps bring in some moisture and lay them down. I’ve been mixing a little trio hair oil cocktail with the HASK Shine Oils in the Keratin Protein, Monoi Coconut, and Argan Oil varieties. My hair is color treated, dry on the ends, and needs a boost so a combination of the three helps me cover my bases to repair my hair, smooth the ends, and nourish them after tossing and turning on my pillow.
Mix up your hair oil cocktail in your palms, rub palms together to mix and warm the oil, and work it into your ends avoiding putting too much product in one place. Keep running your fingers through to distribute and your hair will be looking FAB at this point. I love hair oils, they are magic in a bottle!
At this point my hair was looking great, but I decided to take my style a step further. I had some bend in my hair from the previous day’s curling rod and wanted to bring back those waves.
ADD SOME SHAPE
Taking a curling rod, I’m adding a few imperfect bends to my hair…doing a few pieces here and there for some body and wave. Once I’ve curled all of the pieces I want I run my fingers through them to break it up and look more natural and loose and I’m all set with a new head of hair!
I was inspired to put this rough night hair revival post together from the new Scarlett Johansson movie coming out Rough Night! I have been seeing this movie promo everywhere and have been DYING to see it (I was a huge fan of Bridesmaids and this one looks even better!). HASK was the hair product line they used on set with the cast, and I’m excited to see the hair they rocked in the film. If you guys haven’t checked out the Rough Night trailer, stop what you’re doing and watch it now–it’s hilarious!
And surprise….I’m actually heading to New York to attend the movie premier with ScarJo and the rest of the amazing girl gang cast this Monday, I can’t wait to show you guys all of the behind the scenes of the pre-party hosted by Buzzfeed, the movie premier and red carpet, and the afterparty! Who knows… I might need to follow these tips myself after an amazing night of champagne and film!

I have often seen my wife rush into the bathroom after a long night and then emerge looking pretty darn awesome. Now I know what happens in the mysterious “beautification realm” to produce those results.
